South Korean Firm Shows Interest in Building Recycling Plant in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, October 11, 2024 — South Korea's Dahan Corporation has expressed interest in establishing a recycling plant in Cambodia, aiming to support the country's environmental sustainability efforts. The company's president, Kim Sangyoung, revealed the plan during a meeting with Cambodia's Minister of Environment, Dr. Eang Sophalleth, in Phnom Penh on October 9.

Minister Eang Sophalleth welcomed the potential investment, noting that it aligns with Cambodia's ongoing initiatives to combat plastic pollution and promote a greener environment. He emphasized that tackling plastic waste is a priority for the Cambodian government, which has implemented the "Circular Strategy on Environment." This strategy focuses on fostering a "clean, green, and sustainable" approach to development, with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 through increased forest coverage.

The minister highlighted Cambodia's recent efforts to reduce plastic use, including the "Today, I Don’t Use Plastic Bags" campaign launched in 2023, which attracted over 9.5 million participants. Another initiative, the "Cambodia Beauty, Khmer Can Do" campaign introduced in 2024, saw more than 2.5 million people participating in activities aimed at minimizing plastic consumption.

The potential partnership with Dahan Corporation is seen as a significant step forward in advancing Cambodia's environmental goals and addressing the pressing issue of plastic waste in the country.
